Question Answer
Name 5 lab safety rules. Wear goggles when doing an experiment, Tuck your tie in, Tie long hair back, Report any breakages, Clean up spillages, Hang your blazer up, Keep away from Bunsen burner.
Name three solids, three liquids and three gases. Solids: Wood, Metal, Plastic Liquids: Water, Alcohol, Blood Gases: Steam, Air, Helium
What is the strongest material in the world that workers use on the end of drills when breaking rocks etc. Carbon (diamond)
Why can liquids and gases flow? Because the intermolecular forces holding the particles of a liquid in place are quite strong.
What does gas always try to do? Fill the container.
What is diffusion? Diffusion is a process in which particles move and spread out.
What is it called when you turn ice into water? Melting.
What is it called when you turn water into ice? Freezing.
What is it called when you turn gas into water? Condensation.
What is it called when you turn water into gas? Boiling.
What is it called when you turn ice into gas? Sublimation.
What does reversible and irreversible mean? Reversible means you can change something back to how it was (e.g. ice into water and water back to ice) Irreversible means you can't change something back to how it was (e.g. if you put water and salt and sand together, you can't separate all the materials again)
What is the boiling temperature? 100°C
What is the freezing temperature? 0°C
What is the difference between a sieve and a filter? Filters are made of paper or cloth and sieves are made of plastic or metal.
What is the process called where filter paper is used to separate some solids from liquids? Filtration.
What happens to sugar if you put it in a cup of tea or coffee? The sugar dissolves.
What does soluble mean? It means that something is able to dissolve (especially in water)
What does insoluble mean? It means that something is impossible to dissolve.
What is distillation? Distillation: The action of purifying a liquid by a process of heating and cooling.
What does solvent mean? Able to dissolve other substances.
