Question Answer
Rock cycle The series of processes that change one type of rock into another type of rock
Igneous rocks A rock that is formed from cooling lava
Sedimentary Rocks A rock that is formed from smaller particles of other rocks
Metamorphic rocks A rock that is formed when it is placed under extreme pressure and heat
Sediments Small, solid pieces of material that comes from rocks or organisms
Lava molten rock that erupts on Earth's surface
Extrusive rocks An igneous rock that turns hard on the surface
Intrusive rocks An igneous rock that turns hard under ground
weathering The breaking down of rocks and other materials on the Earth's surface.
Biological weathering The break down of rocks because of animals or plants
physical weathering when rock is broken down into smaller pieces without a chemical reaction taking place. Using because of heat and cold
chemical weathering The process that breaks down rock through chemical changes
Erosion Processes by which rock, sand, and soil are broken down and carried away
Deposition Process in which sediment is laid down in new locations.
Freeze Thaw weathering (frost shattering) Physical weathering is caused by the effects of changing temperature on rocks, causing the rock to break apart. Repeated freezing of ice breaks open rock.
Exfoliation (onion skin weathering) Physical weathering. As the sun shines on rocks during the day it causes them to expand. During the night the rock contracts due to the colder temperature. Over time this continued process causes small pieces of surface rock to flake off.
Carbonation Chemical weathering where rain water is slightly acidic (carbonic acid) and wears away rocks.
Cave A natural underground chamber in a hillside or cliff.
Pot hole A deep hole found in the ground that can open up into a cave
Stalagmites A calcium feature found in a cave rising from the ground
Stalagtites A calcium feature found in a cave coming from the roof.
Bedding plane Layer in the rock of different variety
Landform Natural feature found on land
