Question Answer
What is a computer network? A computer network, or data network, is a digital telecommunications network which allows nodes to share resources.
What is a LAN? A local area network is a computer network that interconnects computers within a limited area.
What is a WAN? A wireless acess point is a hardware device or configured nodeon a local area network that allows wireless capable devices and wired networks to connect through a wireless standard
What are the advantages of a computer network? Site software licences are likely to be cheaper. Network users can communicate by email and instant messenger. Security is good - users cannot see other users' files unlike on stand-alone machines.
What are the disadvantages of a computer network? Purchasing the network cabling and file servers can be expensive.Managing a large network is complicated, requires training and a network manager usually needs to be employed. If the file server breaks down the files on the file server become inaccessible.
What devices are needed to produce a LAN? Network Adaptor,Network Medium,Cable Connectors,Power Supply,Hub/Switch/Router,Network Software.
What is the purpose of a NIC? The NIC contains the electronic circuitry required to communicate using a wired connection or a wireless connection.
What is the purpose of a Router? The main purpose of a router is to connect multiple networks and forward packets destined either for its own networks or other networks.
What is the purpose of a Hub? A hub is a common connection point for devices in a network.
What is the purpose of a Switch? The basic function that any switch is supposed to perform is to receive information from any source connected to it and dispatch that information to the appropriate destination only.
What is the purpose of a WAP? A wireless access point (WAP) is a hardware device or configured node on a local area network (LAN) that allows wireless capable devices and wired networks to connect through a wireless standard.
What is the difference between a Hub and a Switch? A network hub and switch can perform this function. It can sometimes be confusing when trying to figure out what device is currently being used on a computer network, without knowing what each device does.
What is the Internet? It allows us to communicate, to share data and to seek information in a matter of seconds. All this is possible through the use of computers and networks.
How many computers are there in the world? 1 billion
What is the World Wide Web? An information system on the Internet which allows documents to be connected to other documents by hypertext links, enabling the user to search for information by moving from one document to another.
What is the purpose of a Modem? A modem converts digital signals generated by the computer into analogue signals which can be transmitted over a telephone or cable line and transforms incoming analogue signals into their digital equivalents.
What is the purpose of an ISP? An Internet service provider (ISP) is an organisation that provides services accessing and using the Internet.
