Human Development Index The Human Development Index (HDI) is a tool to measure the wellbeing of a country and takes in account aspects of life rather than simply finances. The HDI is called a composite index because it comprises more than just one measurement. There are three dimensions to the HDI: Health - measured by life expectancy; Education - measured by years of schooling; Living Standards - measured by GNP per capita
IDP when people are forced from their homes to seek safety (conflict), though remain within their home country but away from where they live.
Human Well-being understood as a state of health, happiness and/or prosperity. In a broad understanding, well-being is living a good life with which one is satisfied
Better Life Index allows you to compare well-being across countries, based on 11 topics the OECD has identified as essential, in the areas of material living conditions and quality of life. (Housing, Income, Jobs, Community, Education, Environment, Civic Engagement, Health, Life Satisfaction, Safety, Work-Life Balance)
Declaration of Human Rights The first document listing the 30 rights to which everyone is entitled. The Declaration is a living document that has been accepted as a contract between a government and its people throughout the world.
Human Rights , The basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled, often held to include the right to life and liberty, freedom of thought and expression, and equality before the law. Those rights that apply to every single human-being simply because they are human, applied equally without discrimination
Refugee A citizen driven out of their home and country due to war, persecution or natural disaster
3 main indicators of wellbeing health, reflecting on Life Expectancy and Infant Mortality Rate, number of doctors/1000 people and access to safe drinking water. Wealth, often measured by GDP p.c. Education, literacy rates and levels of school/education attendance are key measures.
Human wellbeing index? what does it show? a. A composite statistic based on life expectancy, education and income rates used to rank countries into tiers of human development b. It shows the current situation of a country, dependent on factors as above.
Human Rights: Political and Civil librities Political and Civil Liberties: Right to life and civil integrity, a ban on slavery and forced labour, protection from torture and freedom of thought/religion & a right to vote
Human Rigths: Collective Collective Rights: Rights of groups, self-determination, a clean environment and peace.
Human Rights: Economic/Social Right to work and earn a decent wage, right to trade unions, equality between men and women, protection of families, pregnant women and children
Why was the declaration of human rights created? Born out of the atrocities and enormous loss of life during World War II, the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948 to provide a common understanding of what everyone’s rights are. It forms the basis for a world built on freedom, justice and peace.

Where are child soldiers used? Colombia, DRC and India
Why do human rights abuses still occur when this declaration exists? Agreement not law – corrupt and power-hungry regimes abuse rights to maintain power.
