What plate boundary is the volcano located on? Destructive/convergent.
When did the eruption occur? June 1991. 13th Jun 03:41 PST - 1st small eruption ~18:00 - 15 minute blast hurled magma and rock up to 15 miles high. Largest eruption on 15th Jun.
What magma does the volcano have? Acidic. High viscosity. High silica content.
What was/were the main hazards of the eruption? Lava explosions. Pyroclastic flows. Ash clouds. Lahars.
What were the effects of the eruption? Approx 847 deaths. 10,000 homeless. Approx 17 Mt (megatons) of sulphur dioxide released into atmosphere - caused global temperature to drop ~0.5C from '91-'93. Some rice paddies & sugar cane plantations destroyed by lahars.
What made the effects so severe? Poor housing/buildings. Typhoon Yunya hitting a few days later, remobilised ash deposits to form lahars
What management took place? Forecasting the eruption before it happened. Evacuations witih 10 mile radius - approx 20,000 evacuated. Resettlement of people whose houses were destroyed. Government initiated several rehabilitative and reconstructive programmes. Land use planning post-eruption
