What happened? Limnic eruption - dissolved carbon dioxide eruptions from lake water. Sudden release of 100,000-300,000 tons of CO2. Gas cloud rushed into the valleys, suffocating livestock and humans within 25km
What were the effects? ~1,750 human deaths. ~3,500 livestock deaths. ~4,000 people fled the area. ~1.2km^3 of gas released. Many survivors developed lesions, paralysis and respiratory problems.
What management occurred? Degassing system installed - aims to reduce concentration of CO2 in deep waters
