Question Answer
Define: ecosystem Any group of living and non-living things occurring together and the interrelationships between them
Define: Habitat The place where an organism lives
Define: Population All the organisms of one species who live in the same place at the same time and can breed together
Define: Community All the populations of different species who live in the same place at the same time and can interact with each other
Define: Niche The role that each species plays in an ecosystem
Define: Abiotic The effects of non-living components e.g. pH, temperature, nutrients, light intensity
Define: Biotic effects of living components e.g. predation, food supply and disease
Define: Producer Photosynthetic organisms that supply chemical energy to all other organisms
Define: Consumer An organism that generally obtains food by feeding on other organisms or organic matter due to lack of the ability to manufacture own food from inorganic sources; a heterotroph
Define: Decomposer Organisms that feed on waste material or dead organisms e.g. bacteria, fungi and some animals
Define: Trophic Level A position in a food chain or Ecological Pyramid occupied by a group of organisms with similar feeding mode
Define: Interspecific Competition The competition for resources between species which is a form of environmental resistance to populations of a species.
Define: Intraspecific Competition Competition for resources between members of the same species
Define: Stimulus Any change in the environment that causes a response
Define: Response A change in behaviour or physiology as a result of a change in the environment
Define: Homeostatis Keeping the maintainance of the internal environment in a constant state despite external changes
Define: Negative Feedback The reversal of a change in the internal environment to return to a steady state or optimum position
Define: Positive Feedback Process that increases any change detected by the receptors.
Define: Succession A directional change in a community of organisms over time
Define: Carrying Capacity The minimum population size that can be maintained over a period of time in a particular habitat
Define: Competition Competition happens when resources (like food and water) are not present in adequate amounts to satisfy the needs of all the individuals who depend on those resources
Define: Intraspecific Competition Competition that occurs between those of the same species
Define; Interspecific Competition Competition between those of different species
Define: Coppicing Cutting tree trunks close to the ground to encourage new growth
Define: Conservation The maintenance of biodiversity, including diversity between species, genetic diversity within species and maintenance of a variety of habitats and ecosystems
