| Define: ecosystem | Any group of living and non-living things occurring together and the interrelationships between them |
| Define: Habitat | The place where an organism lives |
| Define: Population | All the organisms of one species who live in the same place at the same time and can breed together |
| Define: Community | All the populations of different species who live in the same place at the same time and can interact with each other |
| Define: Niche | The role that each species plays in an ecosystem |
| Define: Abiotic | The effects of non-living components e.g. pH, temperature, nutrients, light intensity |
| Define: Biotic | effects of living components e.g. predation, food supply and disease |
| Define: Producer | Photosynthetic organisms that supply chemical energy to all other organisms |
| Define: Consumer | An organism that generally obtains food by feeding on other organisms or organic matter due to lack of the ability to manufacture own food from inorganic sources; a heterotroph |
| Define: Decomposer | Organisms that feed on waste material or dead organisms e.g. bacteria, fungi and some animals |
