Question Answer
Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde Key themes 1) Duality of Human nature 2) The idea of being a Gentleman 3) Repression 4) Science vs the Supernatural 5) Fear of the unknown
"Such unscientific balderdash" -Lanyon talking about Jekyll 1) Shows there's opposition between Jekyll and Lanyon 2) During the story, we are led to trust Lanyon, meaning we take his side. Lanyon is also a well respected gentleman 3) We could see that Lanyon represents society, and that Jekyll represents change. 4) This also links in with the fear of the unknown
"... trampled calmly over the child's body" Mr Enfield recounting what he saw Mr Hyde do 1) Oxymoron of "trampled calmly". 2) This instantly sets Hyde out from others as different and not quite right 3) The "child's body" in this quote is the object of the sentence. This links in with the quote "sick child may break a plaything" showing that Hyde does not care about consequences. This links in with the theme of repression
"A hide-bound pennant" -Jekyll talking about Lanyon 1) Further show the tension between Jekyll and Lanyon 2) Shows Jekyll is angry with Lanyon for not accepting more unconventional ideas 3) This shows that Lanyon has a fear of the unknown 4) Shows that Jekyll is slightly more wild than Lanyon, with Jekyll not feeling the need to repress the more outlandish ideas he has in science and happily takes them further than society (Lanyon) would accept at the time
"If we knew all, we should be more glad to get away" -Lanyon 1) Shows that Lanyon believes there are some things that shouldn't be looked into 2) This is a direct contrast to the ideas of Jekyll 3) Links in with the theme of being a Victorian gentleman (there are some things that should not be talked about) 4) This also sums up nicely the potential dangers of science 5) Finally, it puts the reader more firmly on Lanyon's side as he is seen again to be a voice of reason
"Once crowded with eager students and now lying gaunt and silent" -The Narrator describing the laboratory 1) The contrast emphasizes the emptiness and loneliness of the laboratory 2) Could be seen as a description of Jekyll 3) Uses pathetic fallacy 4) This shows how much this loneliness has affected Jekyll and has led him near to death, from his younger years when he was wilder and full of life
"I concealed my pleasures" -Jekyll 1) Links in with the theme of being a Victorian Gentleman 2) Shows the idea of repressing things you enjoy, suggests his pleasures are not acceptable in society 3) It's in a letter to Utterson who also talks about only doing things he enjoys in his own home to maintain a good reputation. 4) Because of this repression, these feelings ended up building up and becoming more extreme to the point where when he finally becomes Hyde and no longer has to worry about expectations, he kills Danvers Carrew and flattens a child
