Question Answer
What is RADIUS? Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service. A centralized authentication protocol that allows for authentication of remote and other network connections. Originally intended for dial-up connections and verifying incoming callers, it is still commonly used by ISPs and in VPNs.
What is TACACS+? Terminal Access Controller Access-Control System. A client/server-oriented authentication/authorization protocol. The current iteration (TACACS+, which replaced TACACS and XTACACS) allows credentials to be accepted from multiple methods, including Kerberos.
What is Kerberos? An authentication protocol that uses a key distribution center (KDC) to authenticate a principal (user/group, program, computer) and provide it with a ticket-granting ticket. The principal then presents this ticket-granting ticket to the KDC in return for a service ticket when accessing a network resource.
What is LDAP? Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. A set of protocols derived from X.500-based directories and operates at port 389. Allows a user to query a directory service with an LDAP client, such as Active Directory.
What is XTACACS? Extended Terminal Access Controller Access-Control System. A client/server-oriented authentication/authorization protocol. 2nd iteration of TACACS, it combined authentication and authorization with logging to enable auditing.
What is SAML? Security Assertion Markup Language. An open standard based on XML that is used for authentication and authorization data.
What is Secure LDAP? Secure LDAP, or LDAPS, introduces encryption using SSL/TLS to the original LDAP protocol to provide secure communications. In this case, port 636 is used.
