Question Answer
IPSec A set of protocols that enable encryption, authentication, and integrity over IP. IPSec is commonly used as a framework for VPNs and operates at Layer 3.
SNMP The management protocol created for sending information about the health of the network-to-network management consoles.
SSH A terminal line protocol with built-in security. Replaced rlogin in Unix/Linux systems, and telnet in others.
DNS The network service used in TCP/IP networks that translates hostnames to IP addresses
TLS A protocol whose purpose is to verify that secure communications between a server and a client remain secure. Successor to SSL.
SSL A protocol that secures messages by operating between the Application layer (HTTP) and the Transport layer
TCP/IP Suite of communications protocols and networking conceptual model
FTPS A secure version of FTP using SSL
HTTPS A secure version of HTTP using SSL
SCP A replacement for FTP that allows secure copying of files between hosts
ICMP A message and management protocol for TCP/IP, includes ping and traceroute
iSCSI A protocol that enables the creation of storage area networks (SANs) and is used in sending storage-related commands over IP networks.
Fibre Channel A high-speed networking technology
FCoE Fibre Channel over Ethernet. A networking protocol that is not routable at the IP layer and thus cannot work across large networks.
FTP Protocol for transferring files over a network. Insecure due to the use of cleartext passwords.
SFTP A secure replacement for FTP that utilizes SSH.
TFTP A UDP-based protocol for FTP that doesn't provide the security or error-checking features of the various versions of FTP
Telnet A terminal line protocol that passes everything in plaintext.
HTTP The protocol used for communication between a web server and a web browser.
