Question Answer
Define Energy. Energy is the strength and vitality required for sustained physical or mental activity.
What unit is used to measure energy? joules, symbol J.
How many different forms of energy are there and what are they? 5, kinetic, heat, light, sound and electrical.
What is potential energy? Potential energy is the energy possessed by a body by virtue of its position relative to others, stresses within itself, electric charge, and other factors.
Define energy transformation. An energy transformation is the change of energy from one form to another.
Calculate how many joules of energy are in 4 MJ. 4, 000, 000 J.
What is photosynthesis and how does it occur in plants? Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants use sunlight to make nutrients from CO2 and H2O.
How can heat energy be transferred? 'conduction, convection and radiation.
What exactly does the law of conservation of energy state? the total energy of an isolated system remains constant, it is said to be conserved over time. This law means that energy can neither be created nor destroyed; rather, it can only be transformed/transferred from one form to another.
What does electrical energy power at your home? It powers your;TV, phones, microwaves and toasters.
What is radiation? Radiation is the emission of energy as electromagnetic waves or as moving subatomic particles, especially high-energy particles which cause ionization.
What is conduction? Conduction is the process by which heat is directly transmitted through the material of a substance when there is a difference of temperature or of electrical potential between adjoining regions, without movement of the material.
What is chemical energy? A means for living things to provide energy for themselves through chemical reactions.
Calculate how many mega joules of energy are in 250 000 J. 250 MJ.
What is nuclear potential energy? Is the potential energy of the particles inside an atomic nucleus. The nuclear particles are bound together by the strong nuclear force.
What is kinetic energy? Kinetic energy is the energy used for movement.
What are the four types of potential energy? gravitational, elastic and nuclear.
Give an example of conduction. Heating a tin can of water using a Bunsen burner. Initially the flame produces radiation which heats the tin can. The tin can then transfers heat to the water through conduction
