Pejorative word given a negative connection
Fourth Wall invisible wall between audience and performers. the audience can see the characters but they can't see the audience. the wall can be broken if the characters interact with the audience unintentional: distractions, prop disaster
Protagonist hero (main character in story)
Antagonist opposing force; doesn't always have to be a being (could be an idea)
Narrator gives us exposition (background information), they can break the fourth wall, omniscience, relatable. host of the play; guide the story

Ritual repeated action, intended to achieve a metaphysical goal example: applause
Catharsis A purge of emotion (release of emotion)
Climax high point of action
Monologue -speech to audience -singular speech by one actor
Soliloquy speech to oneself (to speak thoughts out loud)
Dialogue speech between 2 or more characters
Theme the main idea (the main takeaway)
Plot the specific sequence of action that make up the way the story is told
Symbol Physical or textual image that is recurrent in the play. a lot of information in an "economic package"
Spectacle All of the visual art forms (scenery, costumes, makeup, sound, etc)
Subtext hidden meaning beneath the text
Setting Locale for the play. It can be a time (era, year, time of day, etc)
Tragic Hero Elevated in status
Tragic Flaw defeat in character; hubris (excessive pride)
Allegory a representative story usually employing symbolic use of a character to illustrate complex concepts
Metaphor a comparison between two things, without using "like" or "as" (we use "this is...")
Proscenium "picture frame stage"; physical element (proscenium arch)
Thrust Stage 3 sided stage
Arena Stage Arena theatre in the round; 4 sided stage aisle: for the audience to pass through vom: the passageway for the actors
Black Box a flexible stage, freedom of where to put the audience, and what type of stage to use (black room)
Found Space taking a non-traditional; space and performing in a site specific space
