reflexes	simple automatic response to stimulus, controlled by autonomic nervous system
instincts	tendencies to perform more complex behaviours
comparative psychology	the examination of behaviours across species in order to understand what they're for
Moro reflex	survival instinct to help infant cling to mother by stretching out arms, pulling them back to chest, and cry
diving reflex	response to cold air or water rushing over face by slowing heartrate and controlling breathing
rooting reflex	when baby turns to something brushing it's cheek and starts making sucking motions
sucking reflex	when a child sucks on something that touches the roof of their mouth
theory	an explanation of observations, and is consistent with all observable observations
evolution	the process over time where groups of animals become more specialised for their conditions, and are therefore different from their cousins
selection pressure	biased rate of survival where the environment is biased in favour of one characteristics
