Question Answer
What are the transition metals? They are the block of metallic elements located between groups 2 and 3 in the periodic table.
What are many transition metals and compounds used as and give an example? They can be used as catalyst and one example is iron in the Haber process.
What is thermal decomposition and what happens when it occurs with transition metal carbonates? A reaction where a substance is broken down into simpler substances by heating. When transition metal carbonates are heated, a colour change occurs and they decompose to form a metal oxide and carbons dioxide.
Show the balanced symbol equation and the word equation of the thermal decomposition of copper carbonate copper carbonate to copper oxide +carbon dioxide CuCO3 to CuO + CO2
Metal compounds in solution contain metal ions. Some of these form precipitates (insoluble solids) that come out of solution when sodium hydroxide is added to them. What colour of precipitate di the following ions form: Copper (11) Iron (11) Iron (111) Copper - blue Iron (11) - Grey - green Iron (111) - Orange - brown look at page 65 of chemistry book to find ionic symbol equations
