Positive Psychotherapy
14 sessions of Positive Psychotherapy Developed by Tayyab Rashid and Martin Seligman. These 14 interventions were developed to enhance pleasant, engaged and meaningful life.
Step 1 Orientation Homework Dicuss the role played by positive emotions, the use of character strengths, confidentiality, limits and responsibilites. Homework :- Write a 300-words positive introduction illustrating character strengths
Step 2 Identifying signature strengths Homework Discuss and identify signature strengths that have helped in the previous home work assignment Homework :- Give VIA-IS online test to identify signature strengths
Step 3 Cultivation of signature strengths and positive emotions Homework Clients are coached to formulate specific, concrete and achieveable behaviours Homework :- Start a Blessing Journal and write 3 good things and implement signature strenghts plan (ongoing)
Step 4 Good v/s Bad Memories Homework Clients are encouraged to express feelings of anger and bitterness Homework :- Write 3 bad memories, anger associated with them and their impact
Step 5 Forgiveness Homework Discuss how forgiveness can transform anger and bitterness into feelings of neutrality or positive emotions Homework :- Write a forgiveness letter decribing a transgression and related emotions. Do not deliver the letter
Step 6 Gratitude Homework * Review daily blessings journal * Discuss gratitude as enduring thankfulness *Explore the roles of good and bad memories in gratitude Homework :- Write and present a letter of gratitude to someone whom the client has never properly thanked
Step 7 Mid-therapy check Homework Forgiveness and gratitude homework along with blessings journal and use of signature strengths are reviewed The importance of cultivating positive emotions, therapeutic process and progress to date is discussed Homework :- Continue blessings journal and using signature strengths
Step 8 Satisficing instead of maximising Homework Discuss choosing a good enough option after reviewing a few options instead of choosing the best option after reviewing all options and explore ways to satisficing than maximizing in the context of hedonic treadmill Homework :- Write ways to increase satisficing and device a personal satisficing plan
Step 9 Optimism and Hope Homework Clients are asked to consider that when one door closes another one opens Homework :- Clients identify 3 doors that are closed and 3 doors that are opened
Step 10 Love and Attachment Homework Coach client in active- constructive responding along with recognising signature strengths of a partner, friend or family member Homework :- Give active constructive feedback and arrange a date to celebrate clients signature strengths
Step 11 Family Tree of strengths Homework Discuss significance of recognising signature strengths of family members Homework :- Family members are asked to take VIA-IS and draw a tree of signature strengths and discuss it
Step 12 Favouring Homework *Discuss savouring as awareness of pleasure and a deliberate attempt to make it last *Explain Hedonic treadmill as a possible threat to savouring and suggest ways to avoid habituation or adaptation Homework :- Plan and carry out pleasureable activities using specific savouring techniques
Step 13 Gift of time Homework Disucss ways of using signature strengths to offer gift of time in serving something much larger than the self Homework :- Clients are asked to engage in activites involving signature strengths such as mentoring a child or doing community service
Step 14 The full life *Dicuss concept of full life integrating pleasure, engagement and meaning. *Invite client to complete positive psychotherapy inventory and other measures before final session *Review therapeutic process
