Social Cleanliness Clean to a level that is socially acceptable for personal hygiene. Not disinfected or sterilised
Disinfection Killing of bacteria, fungi and some viruses but not spores Normally by use of special chemicals
Sterilisation Killing all micro-organisms and spores to produce asepsis Autoclave needed and process happens under steam and high pressures
Decontamination Process of of removing those things that contaminate from reusable items so that they are safe to be used again. Involves 4 stages: cleaning, disinfection, inspection, sterilisation.
Asepsis Absence of all living pathogenic micro-organisms
