Question Answer
What is a tensile force? A tensile force, i.e. one producing tension, increases the length of the material on which it acts.
What is a compressive force? A compressive force, i.e. one producing compression, will decrease the length of the material on which it acts.
What is a shear force? Shearing forces are unaligned forces pushing one part of a body in one direction, and another part of the body in the opposite direction. They often cause a material to bend, slide, twist, crack or tear.
When is a material classed as being in a state of stress? A material is classed as under stress when it undergoes an appliance of force in such a way that the material suffers a change of dimensions.
What is the unit of force? The unit of force is Newtons.
What is the unit of stress? The unit of stress is Pascals.
What is the equation to calculate stress? The symbol used for tensile and compressive stress is σ (Greek letter sigma).
What is strain? The fractional change in a dimension of a material produced by a force is called the strain. For a tensile or compressive force, strain is the ratio of the change of length to the original length.
What is the equation to calculate strain? The symbol used for strain is ε (Greek epsilon). For a material of length L metres which changes in length by an amount x metres when subjected to stress,
