Question Answer
B1.3 Respiration Respiration is an exothermic chemical reaction that releases energy.
Anaerobic respiration -takes place with just glucose. -produces much less energy -produces 2 ATP -oxidation of glucose is incomplete -human muscle can respire this way for short periods of time. Aerobic respiration -glucose is oxidized to release its energy -this allows food molecules to be broken down -most of the energy is released in the mitochondria -produces 36 ATP
Word equations Anaerobic respiration= Glucose-> lactic acid+ (energy released) Aerobic respiration Glucose+ oxygen-> carbon dioxide+Water+energy Aerobic respiration symbol equation C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O
