Question Answer
What are the factors affecting global climate change? 1) Orbital Geometry - Circular or elliptical orbit 2) Solar Output - The energy coming from the sun 3) Volcanic activity - Releases lots of sulphur dioxide and ash 4) Surface reflection - When Icy it reflects more light than absorbed 5) Tectonic activity - Movement of plates 6) Change in atmospheric gases
What is the greenhouse effect? 1) The sun emits radiation 2) Short wave radiation passes through the green house layer because it has high energy 3) 50% of it is absorbed and other 50% is reflected back into the atmosphere 4) Greenhouse gases form a blanket 5) Some of the energy is reflected off the earth and escapes back into space 6) The energy that didn't escape is reflected back to earth
What are the main greenhouse gases? 1) Carbon Dioxide 2) Methane 3) Nitrous oxide 4) Water Vapour
What are the human causes for Climate Change? 1) Deforestation 2) More cars/transport - releases more gas 3) Burning fossil fuels - to generate electricity releasing greenhouse gases 4) Higher population - Higher demand for meat; methane levels increase
What happened in Kiribati 2007- Island Nations? Global warming caused ice to melt which rose the sea level (1 to 3 feet) and caused floods. People (300,000) who lived there had to move and they're trying to find a new homeland. People there also can't drink water because sea water is intruding into the pipes.
What happened in the Alps in Austria - Europe? Snow was melting which caused the ski resorts to shut down. Winter sports industry is threatened. Some are using fake snow. All snow related are shutting down. People hoping for more spas and luxury hotels. - Sold its ski operations for less than $1. It used to attract 60-89 million tourists a year.
What is the Great Barrier Reef - Australia - Oceania? Carbon Dioxide is absorbed into the sea and reacts with the sea water causing fishes to die. 90% of the great barrier reef will be bleaching yearly.
What happened to The Northwest passage in Northern Canada? The ice is starting to melt which means it can be easily broken by ice breakers. This means that the ships can pass and lose 4000 miles of their trip. They can take this short cut which takes them to their destination faster. However, Polar Beers are losing their habitat. (The Panama Canal - Europe to India)
What are the negative effects of climate change? 1) The amount of food a field can produce drops when temp is more or less than optimum. This means the demand for food increases due to reduce harvests. Food prices increase due to scarcity. 2) Ice melts flooding low land areas like Bangladesh. Farmland could be flooded too which results in loss of crop harvest. Also houses destroyed and more diseases.
What are the 3 GLOBAL responses to Climate Change? 1) Kyoto Protocol 2) Bali Conference 3) Earth Summit
What is the Kyoto Protocol? - Countries that signed the protocol agreed to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 5.2% minimum - In order to reach this goal, countries could trade carbon credits with other countries.
What is the Bali Conference? - 2007 - 180 countries met to further discuss climate change - The Bali road map was produced which was an initiative aimed to stabilising climate
What is the Earth Summit? - 1992 - The first international environment treaty - 154 nations agreed to prevent dangerous warming from greenhouse gases - its set voluntary targets from the reduction of these emissions
What are the LOCAL responses to Climate Change? 1) BedZed 2) Hounslow Carbon Management Programme (HCMP) 3) Recycling and Automatic lights
What is Hounslow Carbon Management Programme? - It is a programme which has set a target for 2017 to help reduce our Carbon Dioxide emissions by 40% - From areas like; buildings, vehicle fleets and street lighting and waste
What is BedZed and how does it help with climate change? - Since 2002 - They reduced carbon emissions by 56% > By insulation, energy efficient applicants and renewable stuff. A) There is transport near so no cars. B) Good place to park bikes. C) Gas meters to observe. D) Not much electrical lighting. It reduced 81% in energy use, 45% electricity reduction, 64% car mileage, 60% waste recycled.
Recycling and Automatic Lights? - Recycling in school in every school - Street lights changing.
What does the Non-Governmental Organisation do? 1) Green Peace - Campaign against Climate Change - They lead to the adoption of a ban on toxic waste exports to less developed countries - Bans dumping into the sea
What are the examples of corporation sustainability? 1) McDonalds serve their food in paper bags so less plastic and it can be recycled. 2) You can give old clothes to H&M to get vouchers. 3) Bank statements and bills from Natwest are not sent unless requested. 4) Bag for life in tescos so that it can be used again therefore plastic won't get burned.
How is transport managed in Urban Areas? 1) Low Emission zones 2) Congestion charges 3) Barclay Bike 4) Canterbury Park and Ride
What is Low Emission zones? Areas that you can only pass if cars don't release a lot of CO2, only bikes and such, no lorries.
What are Congestion zones (charges)? Have to pay to go into the city. Before the charge, 334,000 vehicles entered each zone. In 2006 around 70,000 few vehicles entered. A reduction of 21%
What are Canterbury Park and Ride? It is a bus which takes you into the city. You can park your car and pay a £1 to take the bus into the city. This is good because it means that there are less cars coming into the city. Also, many people take this because its cheaper than paying the congestion charge.
What are the Barclay's Bikes? They are Bikes that you can pay for. You can take it around and put it back into another station in the given amount of time.
Ecotourism in Costa Rica It is used to develop the rainforest. It developed tourist facilities like zip wires to entertain them. They take tourists through the forest and they also develop it through its plant species.
Coal-Fired power plant in Malaysia It rejected plans to build a coal fired power plant. They didn't want to pollute. They don't mine because they don't want to kill the rainforest and the endangered species. Instead they will develop ecotourism.
Carbon Credits in Bolivia Development will recieve carbon credits. Industrialised countries can buy these credits. This means they earn money with the forest. They earned £25m by selling carbon credits.
I AM GOLD in South America Refused to mine gold. This company wanted to mine gold near rainforest. This is home to 700 plant species, 100 animals and 254 birds.
Texaco - Ecuador Oil has been extracted in Amazon rainforest - 1960s. Recently they went to court for destruction of environment. Underground pipeline has environmental pipeline. Invested £60m in environmental protection. Texaco agreed to pay £40m for clean up.
