Viral Meningitis Less severe resolves without specific treatment
Parasitic Meningitis not contagious infected from fresh water source causes fatal brain infection
Fungal Meningitis Not contagious immune-compromised people treat with IV-antifungal agents
Headache pain in any region of head Laterality, area, quality of pain, onset, timing 90% are benign
Migraine unilateral throbbing gradual--> increase in intensity Worsening- bright light/noise, movement/physical exertion nausea, vomiting/dizziness
Migraine-Treatment No specific cure treat symptoms right away OTC/ Prescription pain relievers (triptans) prevention by avoiding/changing triggers
Tension Type Headache -Moderate Headache - tightening across head--> head and neck muscles - non-pulsatile -can least 30min-->1 week
Tension Type- Treatment -OTC/narcotic pain relievers -muscle relaxants - SSRI/tricyclic antidepressants (Prevention)
Cluster Headache -unilateral -located around one eye - suddent onset of pain---> reaches great intensity -30 min- 3 hours (3x/day)
Cluster Headache Treatment -Triptans and Steroids -beta blockers, antiseizure meds -lithium -antidepressants
Cerebrovascular Disease -all disorders where an area of brain is affected by ischemia or bleeding -cerebral blood vessels -most common life-threatening neurological events
Stroke - abrupt interruption of constant blood flow --> loss of neurological function 1. Ischemic- blockage 2. Hemorrhagic- bleeding
Stroke- Symptoms 1. Sudden numbness/weakness of face, arm, leg, one side of body 2. Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance and coordination 3. Sudden severe headache 4. Sudden trouble seeing 5. Sudden confusion, trouble speaking/ understanding
Stroke- Risk Factors 1. Diabetes 2. Heart Disease 3. Obesity 4. Smoking 5. Hypertension
