why is Lagos important on a regional scale? main financial centre for the whole west africa due to being a trade centre during colonial times (it was under British rule if you need to be specific)
why is Lagos important on a national scale? contains 80% of Nigeria's industry
why is Lagos important on a global scale? a lot of global companies are located there. it has an international port and airport making it fit for global trade
ways of life in Lagos: there are over 250 ethnic groups in lagos, sometimes there is tension between them many festivals are held throughout the year (e.g. Lagos international jazz festival) consumption of resources is rising in Lagos
why is it growing rapidly? rural to urban migration- large number of migrants arrive to the city each year national migration- income is 4 times higher than Nigeria and many people move in looking for jobs international migration-migrants from neighbouring countries, tend to be people employed in foreign bussiness
challenges Lagos faces due to rapid urbanisation: -over 60% of the population lives in squatter settlements (slums, e.g. Makoko) due to a lack of formal housing -most of local population works informal jobs and gets paid $1.25 or less a day due to not being skilled enough for the formal jobs
projects/strategies to make Lagos more sustainable? -waste management e.g. pipes are being placed into rubish,these then collect methane and use it to power the dump -getting energy from waste that would end up in landfill e.g. Ikosi fruit market uses energy released by rotting fruits to provide lighting
