The Counter Reformation When the Catholic Church responded to attacks by Protestants
Council of Trent The purpose of the Council of Trent was to fix the Catholic Church and get rid of the corruption by dealing with the attacks by the Protestants. They also reaffirmed that Catholic ideas were right and changed some things.
The Index Librorum Prohibitorum This was a list of prohibited books for Catholics. It was established during the Council of Trent in 1559 by Pope Paul IV. The Catholic Church considered books on the Index to be harmful to faith and the morals of its followers.
Ignatius Loyola and the Society of Jesus Ignatius Loyola was a Spanish man who formed the religious Society of Jesus, and its followers were called the Jesuits.
The Inquisition It was a Church court that could arrest, imprison and torture people to get confessions. They put on trail the enemies of the Church, knows as heretics. The property of the heretics was confiscated when they killed the people, so they had a financial incentive.
Huguenots The protestants in France were called this. On St. Bartholomew's Day in 1572, there was a massacre by Catherine de Mediei, the French queen.
The Treaty of Nates It was signed in 1598, and it proclaimed that protestants were allowed to practice their own religion in France
