Question Answer
'Unfriended' Poster #2 Analysis 1. The Image
The main focus of the poster is the photo, which includes a lot of information for the rest of the trailer, but not about the rest of the characters in the plot. Such as the party where everything went wrong, the rumour that she was possessed, her being bullied, her boyfriend who is seen as the blame for her suicide, and finally the suicide itself. By having them searched on what seems to be google, as the suggestions and search bar connote - it demonstrates how the videos of the girl went viral which lead to her suicide. As the suicide is at the top, the most searched, and the rest are below - it shows the power of that fact over the rest As if the suicide was a massively searched thing that shocked at lot of people - as the girl is presented as very normal within the start of the trailer. Forming a sense of the internet being a cause of her death and thus involving teenagers - as those conventions are typically placed together. Even more so as the idea of cyber bullying being a major cause of teen suicide thought receiving hurtful messages, and in this case, private information.
Photo Position The photo is positioned in the same way of a Google search, being at the top with the suggestions underneath. The large area of blank space underneath it suggests a sense of mystery and unknowing, considering the search results are not given and the audience to not yet know what happened. Which makes the audience want to know what the search results are.
Photo Colouring The colour of the search is white/light grey which stands out against the full black background. By having a simple colour theme matches the unknowing of the lack of search results. This was also seen in the Orphan poster we analysed
Background The background of the poster is full black, a very typical background colour for the genre of thriller and horror. As black is a negative colour, creating a sense of darkness and mystery, complementing the narrative of the film a lot.
Titles Main Title: - The title 'Unfriended' isn't a very typical title for a thriller. However, although the title is grabbing the audiences eye, the title allows the simplicity of the photo to do that. As the photo tells more of a story and give away information about what than the title does. Unfriended is a term used on the social media platform Facebook, yet the film is more situated around Skype with the most screen time. The Tagline: "This April. Revenge Comes Online". Again, the tagline tells more of the narrative than the title and complements the photo. Considering the narrative of the film is all throughout Skype & Facebook. The Tagline is the only other colour a part from black, white and blue for the social media symbol. Making it stand out, whilst developing symbolism of danger, warning and death through the colour of red. - Also a typical for a thriller.
Social Media & Company Links These are used in most posters so audiences can find out more about the film or communicate about the film using the given social media. Again, building more audience interest.
