Question Answer
How can the Birth Narrative Accounts be Harmonised? Both agree that: > Jesus was born in Bethlehem > Jesus was born during Herod's reign > Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit - virgin birth > Visitors went to Jesus > Jesus' story fulfils the Old Testament prophecy (even if it's not explicitly mentioned in both) > Jesus was for all humans, not just Jews
How may the History of the Accounts be Unreliable? > Matthew's account has little historical detail > Does not include major events, such as the massacre of the infants > Luke insists on accuracy in his account > There are many chronological errors - if Quirinius was the governor, then the census' date is incorrect
What Supernatural Events happen in the Birth Narratives? > Angels appear to Joseph in Matthew > Magi visit Jesus by following a star in Matthew > Jesus is of a virgin birth in both > The hypostatic union - Jesus is both fully human and fully divine
What is Redaction Criticism and how can it Harmonise the Accounts? > A way of critically analysing the Bible by looking at the entirety of Scripture and its context > Looks to see how the author may have edited information to fit their understanding of Jesus, or their "target audience" > Matthew aimed his Gospel at Jews, so linked it with Old Testament prophecies, and Joseph being a descendent of King David > Luke's Gospel was aimed at Gentiles, so includes practices commonplace and assumed in Judaism, such as circumcision, as well as demonstrates how Jesus is for everybody, e.g., by using visitors such as Shepherds > The differences in the Birth Narratives are simply due each author adding / removing detail that they found important for their respective audience
