Question Answer
Althusser;state consists of 2 apparatuses that keep capitalists in power The repressive state apparatuses=police courts+army, when needed, use force to repress WC The ideological state apparatuses controls ideas, values+beliefs through edu Edu reproduces+ legitimates class inequality through ideologies that persuade workers that inequality=inevitable Bowles+Gintis; Edu reproduces obediant workforce that accepts inequality as inevitable Conclude from studies that school rewards personality traits that make a submissive compliant workforce Eg independance+creativity=low grades vice versa Edu stunts+distorts students development
Bowles+Gintis; parallels between school+work Eg both hierarchies these parallels are examples of the correspondant principle which operates through the hidden curriculum Eg pupils get accustomed to hierarchy+competition, etc=schooling prepares Wc pupils for their role as exploited workers=reproducing class inequality Bowles+Gintis' view of edu-prevents WC from rebelling to take back power by legitimising class inequality Eg by ideologoes that justify why it is fair natural+inevitable Edu is a giant myth making machine-Eg the myth of meritocracy (people earn their status) Evidence shows that the main factor determining a persons income is their class/family The myth of meritocracy makes it seem the MC have earned their higher status=WC accept inequality+won't overthrow capitalism.
Willis-WC pupils can resist attempts at indoctrinating them into the myth of meritocracy (qualitative methods -PO+unstructured interviews) studied the counter-school culture of 12 WC 'lads' from school-work They were scornful of conformist boys+have their own intimidating humour of these boys and girls They flouted school rules+found school boring They reject the view that WC pupils can get MC jobs Similar to the culture of male manual workers Eg both see manual work as superior The boys identify with these men This explains why the boys slotted into the jobs capitalism needs to perform Evaluation; Postmodernist criticise Marxists for the idea that large amounts of unskilled workers are needed-now workers need to be skilled+adaptible as new technology rapidly develops Marxists disagree as to how legitimisation takes place (some assume pupils passively accept indoctrinating some argue that school brainwashes pupils) Critics argue that willis's portrayal of the 12 'lads', romantisises them (WC heroes instead of sexist+anti-social) and as there were 12 all male P's= unrepresentative This approach ignores other inequalities But Willis' work has stimulated lot's of research
