Question Answer
What are the things that make iron rust? (2) -water -air (oxygen, specifically)
What is steel made from? It is mostly made from iron.
Describe two changes to iron caused by rusting. -It changes colour -It loses it strength
True or False? Rusting is used to refer to all types of metals corroding. False. Rusting is used only towards iron corroding.
Give examples of metals which resist corrosion. -Gold -Silver -Platinum -Copper -Lead
Why doesn't aluminium corrode? Aluminium is a special case. It reacts quickly to the oxygen in the air to form aluminium oxide which protects the metal underneath from further corrosion.
What does alloyed mean? When a metal is mixed with other metal/s.
What is stainless steel made from? -Iron -Chromium -Nickel -This is an example of an alloyed metal.
How can you stop iron from rusting? -it can be painted -covered in plastic -covered in oil or grease -galvanising
What is galvanising? Galvanising is when iron or steel is coated with zinc to stop the iron underneath from corroding. The zinc coating excludes oxygen and water.
What is anodising? Anodising is when aluminium is placed in a special electrical cell that produces oxygen.
