Absolute Poverty Coping without the resources (food, clothing, shelter) necessary for life. People living in absolute poverty are barely surviving.
Development A process of change that results in an improvement in the quality of life of a community. It usually involves reducing poverty.
Development Indicators Aspects of development that can be measured.
Fossil Fuels Energy-producing materials -oil, coal and natural gas- formed from the remains of long dead plants and animals.
Global commons Resources that no individual or country owns or has legal responsibility for.
Inequalities The differences that exist in people's standard of living or quality of life.
Infrastructre Features of the human environment that allow a community to function, such as roads, public transport, airports, bridges, sewers, water supply, schools and hospitals
Non-renewable resource Any part of the physical environment that cannot be replaced once it is used.
Private Wealth The income and savings of individuals.
Public Wealth The infrastructure of a community; often supplied by the government
Quality of Life A term used to describe the way in which people live their daily lives, not just how poor or wealthy they are.
Recyclable Able to be used more than once.
Relative poverty The situation where some people are poorer than others in the community but still have access to adequate food, clothing and shelter.
Renewable Resource A resource that can maintain and/or replace itself if managed carefully.
Reserve The unused supply of a non-renewable resource.
Resource Any part of the physical or human environment used to meet the needs of people.
Slum A permanent dwelling that had fallen into a state of disrepair.
Squatter settlement An unplanned settlement dominated by makeshift dwellings that are often built from scrap timber, iron and cardboard.
Standard of Living A term used to describe the economic well-being of people.
Sustainable The wise use of natural resources so that people in the future can still use them.
