| Question | Answer |
| Thesis | Spender illustrates the prejudice instilled in a boy as a result of his parents’ discrimination, forcing the reader to question the role of parental control and influence. |
| Structure | No regular rhyme scheme- harsh treatment towards the boy- unexpected bullying Repetition of personal pronouns-connection with the author, emphasis on the boy's life and what he has gone through Each stanza= 4 lines- dependability or certainty of the stereotypes or the bboys |
| Diction | “My parents kept me from children who were rough” has the idea of the poem conveyed in the title itself. The verb ‘keep’ with reference to the context of the poem implies “preventing”. However, the verb ‘keep’ also has its own negative connotations as in the illegitimate “keep”. Therefore it also indicates the deed of holding a person “illegally”. |
| Figurative Language | M - Menacing- The ‘bad’ children talked about in the poem is pictured as ‘menacing’ or ‘scary’ e.g ‘who threw words like stones’ ‘I feared the salt coarse pointing of those boys’. Y- Yielding- (Stanza 2 Line 2)- Given in- surrender- accept being beaten up P- Pernicious- the parents or the gang boys have a harmful effect on the boy- the boys because of the bullying or the parents for the over-protection or their lack of understanding about the boy and his feeling. A- Arrogant- arrogant describes the snobby children bullying him. Adding onto the image that the parents created. R- Resentful- The overall tone of parents towards the young boy because he was beaten up, teased and taunted so badly and his parents did not do anything about them as they thought it was already resolved and he resents them because of that. E - Emotionless- This describes the way that the young boy feels, he is emotionless because he doesn’t know whether to thank his parents for protecting him or whether to feel excluded for having missed out on the freedom. |
| Figurative Language | N - Narrow-minded-The parents think that their child is being protected because of their “barrier” that they created, but the poem proves otherwise. Throughout the poem we observe from the young child's perspective, noticing the truth as opposed to the perfect/protected son. T - Taunting- Over emphasizes the brute strength of the boys- They were muscular and did not hesitate to use their arms and legs. The poet was also scared of their mocking ways. They laughed behind his back, imitating his lisp. (S1 L3, S2 L4, S3 L2) S- Suffering- Both his parents who were vulnerably trying to protect him from the street children. S- Stereotypical- The somewhat agitating image that the parents created in his mind as a boundary from these young boys |
