| Stratification | Social stratification is a society's categorisation of the people into socioeconomic strata, based upon their occupation and income, wealth and social status or derived power |
| Social Class | A broad group in society having common economic, cultural and/ or political status. Commonly this is seen as the upper, meddle and working class |
| Objective Social Class | Individuals are placed into a social class regardless of how they feel about their class position |
| Subjective Social Class | Considers how an individual sees themselves in relation to their class identity |
| Underclass | The lowest social stratum in a country or community consisting of the poor and unemployed |
| Great British Class Survey | The BBC teamed up with sociologist from universities to analyse the modern British class system. Came up with a new model of seven groupings |
| Life chances | A social science theory of the opportunities each individual has to improve his or her quality of his life. The concept was; introduced by Weber |
| Inequality | Inequality is looked at in terms of differences in income, wealth and consumption (what you can by) |
| Absolute poverty | Reference to the actual needs of the poor, a family is poor if it cannot afford to eat |
| Relative poverty | Judgements by members of a particular society of what is considered a reasonable and acceptable standard of living- never fixed it moves in response to changing social expectations and living standards, luxuries become necessities |
| Income | Income is a flow. It measures the receipt of money per period of time |
| Wealth | Wealth is a stock. It measures the value of a person's wealth at a given point of time |
| Social mobility | Is defined as movement of individuals, families and households within or between layers or tiers in an open system of social stratification |
| Inter-generational mobility | Refers to mobility between generations. |
| Intragenerational mobility | Refers to movement between classes by an individual during their working life |
| Meritocracy | Effort + Ability = Reward |
