Question Answer
The 5 Sense Organs and Their Receptors Eyes- colour and intensity of light Ears- sound and balance Nose- Smell/chemicals Tongue- chemicals Skin- touch, pressure, pain temperature
Sensory Neurones The nerve cells that carry signals as electrical impulses from the receptors in the sense organs to the central nervous system
Relay Neurones The nerve cells that carry signals as electrical impulses from the receptors in the sensory neurones to the motor neurones
Motor Neurones The nerve cells that carry signals from the central nervous system/relay neurones to the effector
Effector The muscles or glands that react to the impulse- muscles contract in response to a nervous impulse, glands secrete hormones
Synapses The connection between two neurones is called a synapse- the nerve signal is transferred by chemicals which diffuse across the gap. These chemicals then set off a new electrical signal in the next neurone.
Reflexes Reflexes are automatic responses to certain stimuli that reduce the risk of being injured. They are quicker than normal responses because they don't require any thinking
