  1. Purpose:
    1. The essential purpose of narrative is to tell a story, but the detailed purpose may vary according to genre.
    2. Generic structure
      1. an opening that establishes setting and introduces characters;
        1. a complication and resulting events;
          1. a resolution/ending.
          2. Typical elements
            1. Setting
              1. when and where the story occurs.
              2. Characters
                1. the most important people or characters in the story.
                2. Initiating event
                  1. an action or occurrence that establishes a problem and/or goal.
                  2. Conflict/goal
                    1. the focal point around which the whole story is organized.
                    2. Events
                      1. one or more attempts by the main character(s) to achieve the goal or solve the problem.
                      2. Resolution
                        1. the outcome of the attempts to achieve the goal
                      3. Types of text

                        Attachments:

                        1. Adventure
                          1. Typically a recount or retelling of a series of exciting events leading to a high impact resolution.
                            1. The most common structure is a chronological narrative.
                            2. Mystery
                              1. Structure is often chronological, even in a longer narrative, but complex structural techniques are sometimes used for effect.
                                1. To intrigue and entertain.
                                2. Myths
                                  1. To provide a fictional explanation for natural phenomena.
                                    1. Can pass on cultural, religious or spiritual beliefs and traditions.
                                    2. Legends
                                      1. To provide information about the way particular people lived, and what they believed.
                                        1. Structure is usually chronological, with one episode told after another
                                        2. Science Fiction
                                          1. To entertain and, sometimes, to speculate about the future.
                                            1. Can use any of the varied structures typical of narrative.
                                            2. Fantasy
                                              1. To entertain and to fuel the imagination.
                                                1. May simply be a basic chronological narrative set in a fantasy world but some fantasy narratives extend the ‘fantastic’ element to the structure as well.
                                                2. Historical fiction
                                                  1. To entertain and, sometimes, to inform.
                                                    1. Is about something that has already happened in the past so a series of events is usually the underlying structure.
                                                    2. Fables
                                                      1. The narrative drives towards the closing moral statement
                                                        1. They are often very short with few characters
                                                        2. They use it as a tool to help them organize their ideas and to explore new ideas and experiences
