Steinbeck wrote in the language of real people in 1930s California.
Steinbeck wants to give the impression that the
characters are speaking for themselves and telling
there own story in there own way.
Steinbeck describes important or serious events in a simple way.
E.g. When lennie kills Curley's wife he writes
"And then she was still, for Lennie had broken
her neck" this is more shocking because
Steinbeck has said it in a blunt way.
The characters use Realistic Language.
For e.g. Ranch hands swear a lot.
There is a lot of racist reference.
"nigger" and also, people call
Curley's wife a "bitch"
Steinbeck isn't tryin got be
offensive. It is just captured at a
racist and sexiest time.
Steinbeck uses Descriptive Language,
Alliteration, long flowing sentences,
matter-of-fact "unpainted", Simple
descriptions, Shorter, Broken up
Sentences.
