Resource summary
Structure of Lungs
1 Ribs surrounding thorax, forming RIB CAGE
1.1 Diaphragm lies across bottom of thorax
1.1.1 Lungs are attached to inside of rib cage & diaphragm by PLEURAL MEMBRANES
1.1.1.1 Ribs can be moved by the INTERCOSTAL MUSCLES (which lie between them)
1.1.1.1.1 Trachea divides into TWO tubes, called BRONCHI (one leading into each)
1.1.1.1.1.1 Bronchi highly branched, giving many pathways for air to enter/leave lung.
1.1.1.1.1.1.1 Bronchioles end in clusters of tiny air sacs called ALVEOLI, this is where gas exchange occurs.
