1. William Blake
  1. Writing about the conditions that people who lived in London faced.
    1. Written in 1794
  2. Was a poet and artist who specilised in illuminated texts, often a religious nature. He rejected established religion for various reasons. One was the falure of the established church to help children in London who were forced to work.
  3. He used to live in London so when he says 'I' it is refering to him.
2. Charter'd Thames
  1. This shows the way in which every aspect of life in london is owned even the river. Also shows the symbol of freedom and power of nature.
    1. contrast between power of nature and power of man
  2. the second use of this word can be see as a satirical attack on the obessesion with property rights and human power and having control
    1. ironic as the river cannot really be controlled by people
3. The First paragraph: means ' I walk through the streets of London and every face that I meet shows signs of weakness and woe'

  2. Repetetive structure , written in Quatrains which is 4 lines in each stanza.

  4. From relating the last stanza to the first two it shows repetetivness and a cyclical structure.
    1. This represents the people and when they just think its the end they are where they started again.

The Prelude
1. William Wordsworth
  1. Troubled relationships with parents and relatives. Both parents died by the time he reached his early teens. He embraced nature due to his sever depression and was an early supporter of the French Revolution.
    1. He is a romantic poet,
    2. Was written to present Williams past. Explore nature and wider society and importance.
  2. Autobiographical poem. The Prelude is the first part of an intended three part 'epic poem'. He never finished the poem. The prelude is almost 400 pages long.
    1. Began writing it in 1798 worked on it until his death in 1850 the poem was published 3 years later by his wife.
      1. he describes the poem as views on man, nature and society
    2. an epic poem is full of heroic actions
      1. nature personified is the hero in this poem
  3. treated so badly he considered commiting suicide
2. Language
  1. '(her)' is the personification of nature
  2. poem reflects childlike wordsworth aswell an adult. Nature took him there.
  3. enjambment. Overpowering erge to communicate with audience and the continuation and overflow of the enjambment is like the one long verse.
  4. contrast as there is lightness such as 'blaz'd' and 'happy time' which is contrasted with the darkness of the twighlight and gloom of the lake
    1. enjambment as he shows how happy he is with 'happy time' and showing its all about him. the pause after 'happy time' emphasises his enjoyment

3. Structure

  1. contrasts the 'boat stealing episode' as in the boat stealing episode he is seen as afraid of nature but in the ice skating episode its much more gentle refllection

  1. ' If i should die' creates a negative image
  2. 'A body of Englands' represents the soldier belonging to England and if you kill a soilder you are killing a part of england

  1. in the first stanza the rhythm is AB AB however this then changes during stanza two which is then ABC ABC
    1. This could represent how the war changes people in this case 'the soldier'
3. second stanza
  1. 'All evil shed away' shows that evil is overpowered
    1. love and pride is stronger than evil

1. images of growth/richness/weight

    1. get a sense of how rich autum is and the harvest they well have

      1. allow the reader to pause on certain words makes the reader feel comftable get the impression of the beauty of the season
