The US didn't want to damage
relations with Mexico. They
feared annexing Texas would
offend Mexico.
Texas was a slave state. Many
citizens were against slavery in
the US.
The US feared it might offend other countries.
A step Texas had to take in order to be
annexed was for the US to grant them
recognition. This made recognition
extremely important to those trying to
get Texas annexed. Recognition had to
come first.
Henry Mofit was
sent from the US
to get
information
about Texas.
He said that the
US should wait to
annex Texas due
to his prediction
that Texas would
not have
inependence for
long.
Houston, who was
curretnly
President, sent
two men to
Washinton, D.C.
They were to work
on getting
recognition for
Texas. The two of
them managed to
convince Congress
that Texas had a
good government
and should be
given recogntition.
March 3, 1837:
President Andrew
Jackson gave
official recognition
to Texas.
Causes of Annexation
Manifest Destiny:
Americans belived the US
should expand to the
Pacific Ocean. Acquring
Texas would bring the US
closer to their goal.
More land would equal
more power for the US.
"The final act in this great
drama is now performed; the
Republic of Texas is no more."
-James Pinckney Henderson
In order for Texas to be
annexed, a new Constitution
had to be written.
