Biology
Mitosis
The type of cell division that can make plant and animals grow
Parent cells produce daughter cells
At the end two daugher cells are made which are genetically identical
Mitosis is a way damaged cells are replaced
Meiosis
4 genetically different daughter cells are produced
In meiosis swapping sections of DNA takes place
There are 2 stages of division
Stem cells
Stem cells are specialised cells
They can turn into any type of cell found in the body
Can be found in a developing embryo
Can come from adults too
However, the ones that come from adults can turn into many cells not all types of cells
Can come from bone marrow and developing teeth
There are some ethical concerns
Human life should not be dreated for human purposes
Used for medical purposes
currently being used to treat over 80 diseases
Embryo screening
An embryo is an organism in its early stages of develpoment
Allele is a version of a gene
Embryo screening means checking to see if it aryying any alleles for a genetic disease
If the embryo was carrying the disease the parent would have to decide if they want to keep it or not
Advantages
more chance of developing a healthy child
the expence if the disease will not be there
Disadvantages
The cost is extremely high
Dangers are always present such as infection through disease
