Module 7.2 Nervous system
  1. The nervous system is a communication network that has controls over all the other systems in your body.
      1. Nervous system is a communication network that has controls on the other body systems.
        1. Two parts of nervous system
          1. Central Nervous system (CNS)
            1. Make up your brain and spinal cord.
              1. CNS collect info from around the body, handles the info, then sends out messages after instructs the body on how to respond.
              2. Peripheral Nervous system (PNS)
                1. Make up the nerves that carry messages to and from the CNS
              3. Neurons
                1. Specialised cells that transmit electrical messages from one part of the body to another at very high speed.
                  1. Nerve impulses
                    1. Electrical messages
                      1. Travel in only one direction
                        1. Neurotransmitter is a chemical message released at the end of an axon
                          1. Synapse is the space between two neurons
                        2. Cell body
                          1. Nucleus is the control centre of the cell
                            1. Dendrites are branches from the cell body that receive menages from other neutrons.
                              1. Axon is the nerve fiber that sends nerve impulses away from the cell.
                              2. Types of neurons
                                1. Motor neurons
                                  1. Carry messages from the CNS to effectors
                                  2. Connector neurons
                                    1. Transmit messages between neutrons in the CNS.
                                    2. Sensory neurons
                                      1. Specialised receptors which carry messages to the brain and spinal cord from cells in the same organs
                                    3. Myelin sheath is the insulating layer that covers a neuron.
                                      1. Brain
                                        1. Contains 100 billion neurons
                                          1. Controls and regulates body functions.
                                            1. MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
                                              1. Strong magnetic fields that are used to determine different types of body tissue.
