All substances are made of atoms.
A substance that is made of only one sort of atom is called an element
The periodic table has groups that contain elements with similar properties
atoms have a small central nucleus, made up of protons and neutrons and around which there are electrons

In an atom, the number of electrons is equal to the number of protons in the nucleus.
Atoms have no overall electrical charge.
Atomic number= the number of protons in an atom
Mass number= sum of protons& neutrons
All atoms of a particular element have the same number of protons. All atoms of different elements have different numbers of protons.
Atoms of the same element can have different numbers of neutrons;
these atoms are called isotopes of that element.
