    1. approx 61 million people in uk- population not evenly spread out - 9 out of ten people live in towns/cities
      1. CITIES - popular places to live -
        1. Cities provide housing,jobs,education, medical care
          1. 1/2 world population now live in cities - and number increasing
            1. Fastest growing cities tend to be in poorer countries Mexico city is expected to be in top 3 largest city
          2. WORLD POPULATION DISTRIBUTION
            1. WESTERN EUROPE - low lying gentle sloping, pleasant climate, easy communication and resources for industry - DENSELY POPULATED
              1. AMAZON FOREST - hot,wet, communication and settlement difficult due to thick vegetation - SPARSELY POPULATED
                1. HIMALAYAN MOUNTAINS - Cold, steep slopes, difficult communication and settlements poor soil SPARSELY POPULATED
                  1. POLAR regions - very cold,no soil for farming, communication/settlement difficult SPARSELY POPULATED
                    1. SAHARA DESERT - too hot, dry, communication & settlement difficult SPARSELY POPULATED
                      1. BANGLADESH - low lying,flat,fertile soil hot & wet DENSELY POPULATED
                    2. POPULATION DENSITY - TELLS US HOW CROWDED A PLACE IS
                      1. DENSITY - is the number of people in an area
                        1. divide total population by total area = people per km squared
                          1. DENSELY POPULATED - Means that a place is crowded and has a high population density
                            1. SPARSELY POPULATED - means places with few people and low population density
                          2. FEW PEOPLE LIVE IN PLACES WITH FEW RESOURCES
                            1. Areas with extreme climates are sparsely populated
                              1. extreme temperature
                                1. lack of water/precipitation
                                2. Areas with high altitudes sparsely populated - poor soil, inaccessible steep slopes difficult for settlements
                                3. DENSELY POPULATED AREAS
                                  1. Have habitable environments
                                    1. wealthy and industrial eg europe/Japan
                                      1. poor countries eg india/ethiopia
                                        1. River valleys - sheltered/provide transport/good communication links eg ganges Valley in India
                                          1. lowlands plains - flat fertile soil, easy communication eg Denmark
                                            1. Rich in natural resources - sources for industries eg fossil fuels s Wales
                                              1. Coastal Plains - moderate climate good access sea ports
