Jarrow Crusade - 31ST Oct 1936 a group of 200 men from
the north eastern town of jarrow marched 300 miles
to london
AIM: they wanted the parliament and the public
of the south to understand that they were
responsible citizens but living in an area where
there was 70% unemployment
Their MP -Ellen
Wilkinson known as
'Red Ellen' walked with
them
The men were demanding that a steel works be built to bring back jobs in the town
When the marches finished-little was done about it
-industry stayed closed and marches were given £1 for a
train fare back from london
by 1935 , unemployment in jarrow was 64%
was a crusade not a hunger march
Banners were made in black and white not red because that's communism
