  1. Asocial Phase
    1. birth - 6 weeks
      1. the very young infant is somewhat 'asocial' although many kinds of stimuli produce positive reactions
    2. Phase of Indiscriminate Attachments
      1. 6 weeks - 6/7 months
        1. clearly enjoy human company but tend to be indiscriminate. Begin to smile more at people and fuss when adults put them down
      2. Specific Attachments Phase
        1. 7 - 9 months
          1. begin to protest only when separated from one specific individual. Also become aware of strangers
        2. Phase of Multiple Attachments
          1. 9 - 18 months
            1. become attached to other people by 18 months and become attached to more than just one person
