Primary Hypertension
1. no known cause
2. ? genetic
3. present before 20/40
4. generalised arterial spasm
5. incr. peripheral resistance
Secondary Hypertension
1. as a result of underlying illness
2. renal disease
3. adrenal compromise
4. overactive pituitary
5. present before 20/40
Gestational Hypertension
1. BP increases after 20/40
2. >140 / >90
3. increase of >25mmHg above baseline
Pre eclampsia
1. Gestational hypertension with proteinuria
2. maladaptation of maternal circulatory system in response to the trophoblast
3. spiral arterioles are too narrow and are still able to constrict
4. BP increases and less blood gets to placenta
5. placental ischaemia causes release of toxins into blood which damage vessel endothelium
6. coagulation cascade activated to heal damaged vessels = vasoconstriction = incr BP
Eclampsia
1. occurrence of one or more seizures
Normotensive
1. increased CO
2. vasodilation under progesterone
3. trophoblast gouges out muscular layer of endometrial spiral arterioles
