Top Down approach believes that if you can
identify the modus operandi associated with a
crime then the motive of the perpetrator will also
be able to be established
Roy Hazelwood and Jon Douglas
concluded that all murderers fitted
into two main types of categories
(organised and disorganised)
Nomotheic
Procedure: Content Analysis (examination of a collection of data from
an already existing source) of 100 cases of serial killers from the USA
3.2 Bottom Up Approach
Study: Canter and Heritage
Developed by David Canter
Focuses on developing a profile from the
details of the crime scene rather than the
application of generalised typology
Idiosyncratic
Procedure: Focuses on developing a profile from
the details of the crime scene rather than the
application of generalised typology
Geographical Profiling
3.3 Case Studies
Canter-John Duffy 'The Railway Rapist' -
Bottom Up Approach :)
Drawing on his study of the details of the crime scene
combined with geographical profiling Canter developed
a bottom up profile for the suspect. This profile was
used to narrow down a suspect list of 2000 people
Murder of Rachel Nikell - Top Down Approach :(
Paul Britton used the Top Down approach
to falsely accuse Colin Stagg of the
murder. David Canter defended him using
the Bottom Up approach.
Paul Britton also deduced that
the murder of Samantha Bisset
was not connected to this not
Evaluative Points
:) Usefulness - Offender Profiling is useful
as it can be used by Forensic Services as
shown in the case of John Duffy
:( Does not support Psychology as a science
as no Scientific experiments can be carried
out to test it
