Mud and silt accumilate in a
sheltered part of the coast,
which leads to more
deposition making mudflats.
Salt tolerant plants, pioneer
plants (cordgrass) colonise.
Roots hold the mud together.
Mud levels rise so they are
less frequently covered by
water. Rainwater washes salt
away and the environment
becomes less harsh. More
plant species colonise
(vegetation succession).
