Photosynthesis
  1. General
    1. Definition: A process that converts atmospheric CO2 & H2O to carbohydrates.
      1. Oxgenic Photosynthesis
        1. Light energy transfers electrons from H2O to CO2, which produces carbohydrates.
          1. In this transfer, the CO2 is "reduced," or receives electrons, and the H2O becomes "oxidized," or loses electrons.
            1. O2 is produced along with carbohydrates.
              1. 6CO2 + 12H2O + Light Energy → C6H12O6 + 6O2 + 6H2O
              2. Anoxygenic Photosynthesis
                1. Uses electron donors other than H2O.
                  1. Typically occurs in bacteria (purple bacteria & green sulfur bacteria)
                    1. CO2 + 2H2A + Light Energy → [CH2O] + 2A + H2O
                2. Chloroplast structure and thylakoid membrane
