Annotation tips
  1. Spend no more than five minutes
    1. Write a sentence long into so they know which question, then spend 8 minutes a paragraph
    2. Read through the text. If it helps, briefly look at the question
      1. Circle/underline/highlight words and phrases which stand out to you
        1. DON'T look for specific techniques - it takes too long
          1. When you see a word which stands out to you, identify the technique then
            1. That being said, if you find one used consistently then keep an eye out
            2. If you find a really good adverb, for example, keep it in mind as you could find more
            3. For higher level students, aim for 4 detailed paragraphs
              1. Try to find multiple quotes a point
                1. One similie does not mean 'the author uses similies throughout to make it dramatic/significant'
                  1. Its worth thinking of your points after annotating
                2. It can be helpful to annotate chronologically
                  1. Look at the tone thats created at the beginning, middle and end by your selected words
                    1. E.g is youn find words that create a sinister tone
                      1. Does this tone change? this could be your next paragraph
                        1. Annotating by tone throughout:
                          1. Ensures comments on structure and form
                            1. Allows you to discuss various techniques throughout 1 paragraph without getting away from you point
                          2. e.g. If you see techniques such as changing adverbs throughout
                            1. Make this one of your points
                              1. Study this change - are there any other quotes that reinforce this change?
                          3. In Summary
                            1. 5 minutes of annotation
                              1. Pick out interesting words/phrases/changes in tone NOT specific techniques
                                1. Open a random page of the text for revicion
                                  1. Pick out 4 points (either techniques or changes in message/tone, to use in the essaqy
                                    1. For revision, spend no more than 8 minutes on a practice paragraph from this essay
                                      1. 8 minutes each for 4 paragraph with a couple of minutes for intro and conclusion for the exam. 5 mins proof reading
