For my preliminary i used the college
classroom as my location, but in my final
product i did location research - into
conventional horror/thriller sets and
therefore made my product conform to
this by setting it in a remote woodland.
Preliminary Location
Film Opening Location
Actors
I considered my actors more carefully when planning
my final product as opposed to my prelim task. In my
prelim i did not consider my actors and simply chose
who was available. However for my film opening i
chose my actors based on my audience research and
on horror and thriller conventions.
Film Planning
I was able to manage my time much more
effectively when creating my product compared to
my prelim, this allowed me to organize my actors
so that they would be available the days i decided
to film. Therefore overall i believe that my time
management skills have improved greatly when
producing my film opening.
Construction
Holding a steady shot
I also used a tripod for the majority
of my shots in my final product,
whereas in my prelim i only used it
for a few of my shots. Therefore by
using a tripod in my real product
the footage i collected was of a
much higher quality and looked
much more professional.
Lighting
When creating my final product i
considered heavily my lighting, as i
found in my research that typically
horror/thriller films had quite low level
lighting. I didn't do this however in my
preliminary task, which made it look
unprofessional.
Filming
I filmed using a more high quality
camera, meaning it was easier to
hold a steady shot and the footage
was of a high quality.
In my prelim i only filmed on take of each shot
that i had planned, however when creating my
final product i ensured that i had a range of takes
of each shot to choose from for the editing
process. I also filmed various different angles of
each shot to get a larger range of footage.
Over the shoulder shots in both
my prelim and final product.
In my prelim video my actors
improvised the dialogue. However
when planning my final product i
planned to have no dialogue as i
felt this would be more effective for
the horror/thriller genre.
Time Management
I also believe that i managed my time much more
effectively when filming my final product compared to
my prelim, as i had more time to prepare and plan my
shots, to ensure that i made the most effective use of
my time on my planned shoot days.
Editing
Intertitles
From my prelim to my final product i have learnt how to add text onto a
video in final cut, as well as adding effects/transitions to these titles. I
believe that this overall gave me a very professional looking film opening.
Sound
I did not consider my sound choices when
editing and filming my preliminary task.
However upon constructing my final product i
considered my music choices carefully. I
added sound effects such as a door slamming
and created a soundtrack to go with my
sequence.
In doing this i learnt how to use
garageband effectively and how to
use the tools for editing sound
within Final Cut.
Final Cut
When constructing my final product on Final Cut
i was much more familiar with the software and
able to use its various features more effectively
compared to my preliminary video.
My match-on-action was much more
precise and accurate compared to my
prelim in which some shots did not
flow from one another.
