  1. DEFINITION: The targets pursued by the HR department of the business
    1. INFLUENCES ON HR OBJECTIVES:
      1. CORPORATE OBJECTIVES- set by the HR to acheive its objectives.
        1. EXTERNAL INFLUENCES ON HR OBJECTIVES:
          1. PRICE ELASTICITY OF DEMAND FOR PRODUCT:-when demand is stongly price elastic-->most businesses will set HR objecives that allow it to reduce labour costs--> like budget airlines
            1. CORPORATE IMAGE- business want to keep employees happy, so that industrial action wouldnt damage their image
          2. ATTITUDES AND BELIIEFS OF SENIOR MANAGERS- if they belive the current workforce is an asset, then they will want to keep the current workforce.
            1. THE TYPE OF PRODUCT- if the product is hard to produce, then making use of labour is the primary objective
            2. MAJOR HR STRATEGIES
              1. SOFT HR- the belief that the employees are the most valuable asset to the business. Therfore their value must be maximsed and devloped over time- kind
                1. employees are empowered to take descions- employees are encouraged to extend skills- employees are consulted regularly
                2. HARD HR-
                  1. views employees as a resouce that msut be used as efficently as possible- they are no different from machines- employees are hired as cheaply as possible and managed closely.
                    1. pay kept to minimium- little or no empowerment- communication mainly downards-
