Atoms, Elements and The Periodic Table
  1. Elements
    1. They basic building blocks of matter
      1. Cannot be broken into simpler chemicals
        1. all atoms of an element are the same
          1. atomic structure of an element determine the position of the element in the periodic table
          2. Atomic Structure
            1. Each atom contains a small positively charged nucleus
              1. nucleus is made up of two types of particles
                1. Protons -Positively Charged
                  1. Neutrons- NO charge
                  2. negatively charged ELECTRONS orbit the necleus
                    1. every atom of the same element has the same amount of protons
                      1. The Number of PROTONS is known as the atomic number
                      2. The mass of the atoms is known as the RELATIVE ATOMIC NUMBER
                      3. The Periodic Table
                        1. Medeleev
                          1. first periodic table was created by dmitri medeleev in 1869
                            1. he noticed patterns when the elements were arranged in order of relative atomic mass
                              1. there was gaps in the sequence that represented unknown elements
                              2. Arranged in a logical way which allows you to predict the properties of other elements E.g In order of Atomic mass
                                1. the rows are called periods
                                  1. the columns are called Groups
                                    1. some elements in the middle are called - the transition metals and have no group number
