Immunisation
- Antibodies can be found
in the cell membranes of
white blood cells.
- When a virus infects,
the body produces
many lymphocytes.
- Each has a
slightly different
shaped antibody
(due to mutations
in the gene for the
antibody protein).
- The lymphocyte with the most closely fitting
antibody then divides quickly to attack all of
the virus cells.
- The lymphocyte with the
correct antibody is then
converted into a memory cell.
- This memory cell allows
the body to produce
antibodies quickly if the
body is infected with the
same virus.
- The memory cell can
survive for around 10 years.
